Google launches Universal Cart across Search and the Gemini app
Universal Cart lets U.S. shoppers save and buy products from many stores in Google Search and Gemini, so retailers missing from AI answers lose the sale.
TL;DR
- Google began rolling out Universal Cart across Google Search and the Gemini app in the U.S. on 15 October 2026, after a May preview.
- Universal Cart keeps products from AI Mode and Gemini answers saved and price-tracked, so U.S. retailers in those answers gain and absent retailers lose sales.
- U.S. e-commerce leads should update Merchant Center product data first, then have developers build Google’s Universal Commerce Protocol Cart API for cart transfer.
What changed
Google began rolling out Universal Cart in the U.S. across Google Search and the Gemini app on 15 October 2026, after previewing it at Google I/O on 19 May 2026, when it said YouTube and Gmail would follow. The cart holds products from several retailers and keeps them across Google, so a shopper can save a handbag in AI Mode in Search and find it later in the Gemini app.
The cart draws on the 60+ billion product listings in Google’s Shopping Graph to send alerts about price drops and restocks. It is built on Google Wallet, so it can suggest which of a shopper’s cards to use, and it shows promo codes.
Shoppers can pay with Google Pay inside the cart at many stores, or move the items to the merchant’s own cart and finish on its site. Google names Nike, Sephora, Target, Ulta Beauty, Walmart, Wayfair and many Shopify merchants for these checkout options. Suresh Ganapathy, Senior Director, Product Management, Consumer Shopping at Google, wrote that shoppers “will receive direct confirmations and customer support from the merchant, and they will remain the seller of record.”
The 15 October post names no country beyond the U.S., gives no date for bringing the cart to YouTube or Gmail and does not say how merchants join. Its examples place the cart in AI Mode and the Gemini app, and it does not mention AI Overviews.
Why it happened
Universal Cart follows two Google launches that put buying inside AI answers. On 13 November 2025 Google began rolling out agentic checkout on Search, including AI Mode, with U.S. merchants such as Wayfair, Chewy and Quince. It buys a price-tracked item on the merchant’s site with Google Pay once the shopper confirms.
On 11 January 2026 Google launched the Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP), an open standard for agentic commerce, meaning AI that completes shopping tasks on a person’s behalf. Shopify, Etsy, Wayfair, Target and Walmart co-developed it. The same post announced Merchant Center product attributes for AI Mode and Gemini, such as answers to common product questions, and said Google’s goal remained to help retailers get discovered.
OpenAI runs a similar route inside ChatGPT. As of 29 October 2026, its commerce documentation says Instant Checkout in ChatGPT works through checkout endpoints the merchant hosts under the Agentic Commerce Protocol.
What it changes for GEO
Universal Cart moves the sale closer to the AI answer, so U.S. retailers that AI Mode and Gemini already recommend gain the most. The recommendation is the most valuable moment in an AI-assisted purchase, and the cart now keeps the recommended product saved across Google, with price-drop alerts, until the shopper pays. Brands the models learn to recommend first keep that place, so they also fill the carts. Retailers missing from the answers lose the sale before checkout begins.
A UCP integration works after that choice. Google’s Universal Commerce Protocol Cart API moves a cart the shopper has already built to the retailer’s website, so it serves a sale the answer has already won. ChatGPT ads follow the same order, sitting under the answer on a separate system, and paying for them leaves the answer unchanged. A retailer that builds checkout before it appears in the answers pays for the last step of a sale that never begins.
The recommendation rests on sources the retailer controls: its Merchant Center data and its own product pages. Google’s January 2026 attributes for conversational shopping ask for answers to common product questions. Pages that read like the buyer’s question, with comparisons and “best for” uses, are the ones AI answers pick. A stale price matters more now, because a wrong price in an AI answer costs the sale.
The change reaches U.S. e-commerce first, and B2B manufacturers and service firms come later. It also covers Google alone. OpenAI runs Instant Checkout in ChatGPT on its own protocol, and each engine answers from its own sources. A retailer therefore judges its place in AI Mode, Gemini and ChatGPT search one engine at a time.
What to do
The head of e-commerce at a U.S. retailer should first bring each Merchant Center price, stock status and attribute up to date. Google’s guide to AI features in Search lists current Merchant Center information among the basics for getting pages into AI Overviews and AI Mode. Then rewrite product pages to answer buyer questions and compare options.
Developers then build the Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP) Cart API and publish a UCP profile at /.well-known/ucp. The retailer fills out the interest form on Google’s Merchant Center onboarding page and, once selected, tests cart transfer and native checkout in a sandbox. Onboarding is rolling out in the U.S., with Australia and Canada next year. Google has set no U.K. or EU date.
To check results, track brand mentions in AI Mode and Gemini engine by engine and ask every new customer how they found the shop.
