Ahrefs finds ten OpenAI publisher partners in ChatGPT's top 50 sites

Ahrefs counted how often ChatGPT cites OpenAI publisher partners and found review sites lead, so a brand in their buying guides can reach ChatGPT answers.

TL;DR

  • Ahrefs reported on 3 November 2026 that ten domains owned by OpenAI’s content partners rank among the 50 sites ChatGPT cites most in US answers.
  • Brands named by partner review sites such as Tom’s Guide and Vogue gain, and brands picking press targets from OpenAI’s partner list alone lose.
  • Heads of marketing should find which sites ChatGPT already cites for their category and pitch the OpenAI partner review titles among them first.

What changed

Ahrefs counted how often ChatGPT cites OpenAI publisher partners in a study published on 3 November 2026. Ahrefs found ten partner domains among ChatGPT’s 50 most-cited sites and 47 among its 500 most-cited. The study checked 85 partner domains in Brand Radar, Ahrefs’ database of AI answers, counting the US ChatGPT answers in the November 2026 snapshot that link to each.

Brand Radar’s ChatGPT index holds 5.5 million US answers, and Ahrefs ranks each domain against the 2,000 sites ChatGPT cites most. Ahrefs notes that its US-only data undercounts publishers that write mainly in other languages. Single citations change a lot from day to day, as Ahrefs’ study of AI citation stability showed. Ahrefs treats the large partner domains, which move least, as its firmest figures.

The most-cited partner domains are mostly review and lifestyle titles, and five each appear in more than 30,000 US ChatGPT answers:

Vogue, Car and Driver, Tom’s Guide, Good Housekeeping and TechRadar each appear in more than 30,000 US ChatGPT answers.
Figure 1. Vogue, Car and Driver, Tom’s Guide, Good Housekeeping and TechRadar each appear in more than 30,000 US ChatGPT answers.

Vogue leads with 42,108 answers, ahead of Car and Driver with 41,603, Tom’s Guide with 36,439, Good Housekeeping with 35,728 and TechRadar with 31,415.

Future, the UK publisher behind Tom’s Guide and TechRadar, earns more ChatGPT citations than any other partner group in Ahrefs’ data. Ryan Law, Director of Content Marketing at Ahrefs, wrote: “Future’s strength is product reviews and buying advice, which is exactly the kind of question people ask ChatGPT to answer.” The New Yorker trails with 3,099 answers and Investopedia, a Dotdash Meredith finance site, with 3,217.

Why it happened

OpenAI has signed content deals with more than 20 publishers since 2023. Under each deal, as Ahrefs describes it, OpenAI licenses the publisher’s content and ChatGPT summarizes it with attribution and a link. Dotdash Meredith announced its deal on 7 May 2024, under which ChatGPT shows its content with credited links in relevant answers.

Ahrefs first saw the effect in a study of 12 June 2025: only 14% of the top 50 sources were shared across Google AI Overviews, ChatGPT and Perplexity. Patrick Stox wrote there that ChatGPT has licensing deals with many sites it cites.

Ahrefs’ query fan-out study of 12 October 2026 tracked partner titles among ChatGPT’s 200 most-cited domains, in US data of 2.4 to 3.8 million answers a month:

OpenAI partner titles took 7.5% of top-200 ChatGPT citations in March 2026, 15.8% in July and 12.5% in late September.
Figure 2. OpenAI partner titles took 7.5% of top-200 ChatGPT citations in March 2026, 15.8% in July and 12.5% in late September.

The partner share of those citations more than doubled from 7.5% in March 2026 to 15.8% in July, then held 12.5% in late September.

What it changes for GEO

Brands sold through reviews and buying advice gain most from ChatGPT’s lean toward OpenAI’s partners. Pages shaped like the buyer’s question get picked, and the partner titles ChatGPT cites most, such as Tom’s Guide, TechRadar, Car and Driver and Good Housekeeping, publish those pages. AI engines judge a brand by how many trusted sources mention it and how widely, so a place in those guides adds a mention on a site ChatGPT already cites.

Brands that pick press targets from OpenAI’s partner list alone lose the ChatGPT reach they expect, because a deal lifts a publisher’s titles unevenly. The Atlantic appears in 724 US ChatGPT answers against Vogue’s 42,108 in Ahrefs’ count. The number of ChatGPT answers that cite a title in the brand’s own category decides its place on the pitch list, and the partner list ranks below that number.

No group of sites owns ChatGPT’s citations. Partner titles held 12.5% of citations among ChatGPT’s 200 most-cited domains in late September 2026, after 15.8% in July, so most went to sites without a deal. No single website holds more than 2.1% of the 2,283,923 AI citations in Agenzy’s 2026 source study, and it takes 1,057 different websites to cover half of everything the AI engines cited (n=138 business projects).

The partner lean belongs to ChatGPT. Each engine answers from different sources, as the websites ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews and Perplexity cite most show, so a brand judges a partner placement engine by engine. Where the partner review titles are hard to enter, the work goes to the brand’s own site, the one source it controls, in the same shape: comparisons and “best X for Y” pages.

What to do

The head of marketing should have the team map the sites ChatGPT cites for the category’s buyer questions before the next PR plan is set. The team runs the category’s non-branded questions through an AI visibility tracker, lists every domain ChatGPT cites and marks the OpenAI partners among them. Partner review titles that ChatGPT already cites in the category go first on the pitch list, and Ahrefs advises using the partner list to break ties.

Brands selling outside the US check their own market’s answers, since Ahrefs’ figures cover US answers. Before the first placement, the team records the cited domains per question and rereads them monthly, engine by engine, the way AI visibility tracking shows whether ChatGPT cited your site.
