Ahrefs finds Reddit mentions track AI visibility most closely
Ahrefs found Reddit threads track AI visibility closest of seven mention types, and press counts no more than other webpages, so breadth of coverage wins.
TL;DR
- Ahrefs reported on 3 November 2026 that Reddit mentions tracked AI visibility in ChatGPT and Google’s AI answers more closely than six other mention types.
- Brands mentioned widely across many sites gain, since press coverage scored below ordinary webpage mentions, while brands counting on a few big-name articles lose.
- Heads of marketing should count where their brand is mentioned off its own site, Reddit threads first, and track AI mentions monthly by engine.
What changed
Ahrefs published a study of seven types of brand mentions on 3 November 2026 and found that Reddit threads naming a brand tracked how often AI answers named it more closely than any other type. Louise Linehan wrote the study for Ahrefs with data scientist Xibeijia Guan. The study covered 10,000 US brands and 260 million non-branded prompts on ChatGPT, Google AI Mode and Google AI Overviews.
Ahrefs counted each brand’s AI mentions in the public answers stored in Brand Radar, Ahrefs’ database of AI prompts and answers, leaving out prompts that named the brand, and compared that ranking with seven rankings of off-site mentions. The comparison used a Spearman correlation, a statistic that scores how well two rankings agree, from 0 when they are unrelated to 1 when the order is the same. Across the three AI tools combined, the seven types scored as follows:

Reddit mentions, counted in Reddit threads that rank in Google, scored 0.75. Domain mentions, webpage mentions and traffic-weighted webpage mentions each scored 0.70, news article mentions 0.67, YouTube mentions 0.64 and TikTok mentions 0.60.
Press coverage carried no extra weight in the Ahrefs study. News article mentions scored 0.67 against 0.70 for webpage mentions in general, and weighting webpage mentions by each page’s organic traffic left the score at 0.70. Louise Linehan, content marketer at Ahrefs, wrote: “we suspect ‘mentions are the new links’ is more about how widely you’re talked about than who’s doing the talking.”
Why it happened
The November 2026 study builds on Ahrefs’ earlier correlation studies of brand signals and AI answers. On 26 May 2025, Ahrefs reported that branded web mentions correlated at 0.664 with brand visibility in Google AI Overviews across 75,000 brands, against 0.218 for backlinks. On 7 July 2025, Patrick Stox found in an Ahrefs study that web mentions correlated at 0.65 with Google AI Overviews visibility and 0.15 with ChatGPT visibility, across the 50 websites mentioned most in Brand Radar.
On 12 December 2025, Ahrefs extended its 75,000-brand study to ChatGPT and Google AI Mode, and YouTube mentions correlated most strongly, at about 0.737. Ahrefs writes that the most common question after that study was whether the correlations only showed the shape of a big brand, so the November 2026 study also compared brands with similar search demand.
What it changes for GEO
Brands that many sites talk about gain, and brands that spend their earned-media budget on a few prestige articles lose their assumed edge. AI engines judge a brand by how many sources mention it and how widely, and the Ahrefs figures fit: news articles scored below webpages in general, and a niche site’s mention counted about as much as a large publication’s.
Brands hoping one Reddit post will lift their AI visibility lose as well. A brand with 10x more Reddit mentions had about 5.5x more AI mentions in Ahrefs’ data, and a brand with 10x more webpage mentions about 3.7x more. The median brand had 8 Reddit threads naming it and 29% had none, which makes one new post a small step.
Reddit’s weight differs by engine, as do the websites each AI engine cites most. Reddit is the single most cited domain in Agenzy’s 2026 AI source study, taking 2.1% of 2,283,923 citations and appearing in 92.8% of 138 business projects, with ChatGPT citing it 5.0x more heavily than Perplexity.
Off-site mentions predict less on ChatGPT than on Google’s AI answers, so a brand’s standing has to be read engine by engine. Ahrefs found ChatGPT the least tied to off-site mentions on 6 of 7 mention types, and 10x more webpage mentions went with 2.2x more AI mentions on ChatGPT against 3.5x on Google AI Overviews.
The Ahrefs study measures correlation across brands, as Ahrefs states, so its ranking says where to test and proves no cause. Brand size explains part of the link: among brands with similar monthly searches, the correlation for webpage mentions fell from 0.70 to between 0.34 and 0.54. Ahrefs’ order has moved before, with YouTube mentions first in December 2025, so a budget moved without a baseline and a comparison buys an anecdote.
What to do
The head of marketing should have the team count the brand’s off-site mentions by type before the next earned-media budget is set, beginning with Reddit threads that rank in Google. The team compares the Reddit count with the median of 8 threads in Ahrefs’ study and plans coverage across many sites, small niche sites included, alongside any big-name press.
Before the work begins, the team records the brand’s AI mentions on non-branded buyer questions, engine by engine, the way brands measure how often AI answers mention them, and keeps a set of questions the work does not target as a comparison. The team reads both sets monthly and judges the result over months, since Ahrefs’ study of AI citation stability found half or more of citations gone the next day.
